When a board is exposed to elements, such as moisture, salt, etc, the biggest concern is that these substances may enter the internal components (motor, controller, battery) of the board and may cause damage/corrosion. The most obvious place where moisture/elements can enter is through the board's bearings, which may rust over time and cause decreased range.
While we don’t recommend opening up the internal components of the board and cleaning the electrical components, you can remove certain swappable components to reveal the surface of the internal components such as the battery lid and controller lid. If you feel comfortable doing this, then it may be beneficial to perform a surface cleaning of the top of these components.
In addition, we sell a cleaning kit which may make things easier. There's also a video on our YouTube that shows how you can effectively clean your board.
Cleaning the Footpad/Bumper/Fender:
We recommend cleaning the swappable accessory components, such as the footpads, bumper, and fender (or fender deletes), to wipe off any potential salt or condensation. We recommend cleaning the grip tape of your board with a grip tape eraser or a brush and you can clean the fender/bumpers with a damp cloth — do not use alcohol-based cleaners. Be sure the cloth is damp, not soaked, and wring out all excess water. Once you’ve wiped off the items, let them air dry before reinstalling them.
Cleaning the Outside of the Motor Hub:
Take this opportunity to also dry the surface of the motor hub, especially around the axle, as this runs directly through the bearings on each side of the board. Do not use condensed air cans as they can push dirt/sand into the internals of the motor.
Cleaning the Battery and Controller:
With the swappable components removed, you can also wipe down the surface of the battery module with a dry rag, making sure to clean both the top and bottom. Do the same for the controller side of the board. We do not recommend removing the controller lid as it could damage the internals which may void the warranty. Please carefully wipe both sides of the controller module. Once everything is cleaned and dry, you can reattach the swappable components.
Important Note:
While this cleaning process won’t prevent internal corrosion that could result from water or salt entering the modules, it will help reduce the risk of further debris or liquid causing damage to the surface. Please let me know if you have any other questions—we’re happy to assist!
